In a world filled with modern “conveniences”, we are exposed to toxins everyday. From the water we drink to the air we breathe, our bodies are taking in more toxins than ever before. In fact, the CDC says that about 80% of all illnesses have environmental and lifestyle causes. So there’s no way to avoid toxins all together, but you can detox to help rid your body of damaging substances.

The word detox is everywhere and there are so many different things available like pills, juice cleanses, and a variety of different concoctions but… do you really NEED them? Maybe not. Your body is a self detoxifying miracle thanks to some amazing organs and the magical gastrointestinal system. They just need a little help from some naturally cleansing foods that can all be found at the grocery store.

#1. Cruciferous vegetables.

Ok, so there’s no escaping leafy greens and cruciferous veggies. They are on every single list of the healthiest, most detoxifying foods. They include broccoli, kale, cauliflower, spinach, bok choy, and brussels sprouts. Not a fan of kale? Try kale chips or juicing it. Don’t love raw broccoli? Roast it! What about adding a handful or two of spinach to your smoothie? It’s all about experimenting and finding out what you like.

#2. Lemon.

Consuming lemon on the daily has been shown to prevent stress-related liver damage and regulate blood pressure. Lemon water is a fantastic way to get your daily dose. Just squeeze a lemon into warm H2O to get things going in the am or sip on cold water with lemon throughout the day. If starting your day with warm lemon water, make sure to wait 20 minutes after drinking it before grabbing your morning coffee or eating breakfast.

#3. Green tea.

Green tea is loaded with good-for-you antioxidants that protect against free radicals that cause aging. It’s also been shown to prevent certain types of cancer. #4. Blueberries.

Again with the antioxidants! These pack a detoxifying punch and help to lower blood pressure, fight cancer, and protect heart health. Add a handful to your morning yogurt, cereal, smoothie, or mix them into your favorite salad for lunch or dinner.

#5. Turmeric.

This beautiful spice has been used medicinally for 4,000 years! It has been found to have antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anti tumor, and antioxidant properties. Whoah that’s a lot of really great anti’s. Add it to soups, smoothies, and tea. Also try sprinkling a little on your hummus or avocado toast.

#6. Avocado.

Nice segue into the next star detoxifier…avocado! This fruit is delicious and extremely versatile. Mix it into your smoothie, get creative with toast, add it to tacos or a salad, or even whip it into chocolate pudding or mousse. It’s one of our favorites!

#7. Ginger

Ginger is a known gastrointestinal aid, but did you know the intestines performs so much detoxification work? It’s true! Consuming ginger regularly can help eliminate waste and boost the body’s ability to process food. Add sliced ginger to soups, stir fry it in strips with veggies, grate it to make sauces, or add it to smoothies or drinks.
