I don’t know about you, but my mother has always been a vast book of knowledge when it comes to anything to do with cooking, household cleaning tips, laundry, self help advice, and so much more. I don’t even know where all the knowledge comes from. She surprises me on a regular basis and all of her tips actually work. We thought it would be a great idea to share her top tips with our community.  Here are our favorite tips from my mother, Anna:

1 – How to get rid of pit stains in white clothing – Soak your whites in water and the original Cascade dish powder for half a day. For every gallon of water, use 1/3 cup of the dish powder. Then put through the washing machine normally. We know this isn’t a chemical-free option, but it works when nothing else does. It’s a great way to save the whites you thought you would have to donate.

2 – How to get ink stains out – Spray with WD40 or cheap hairspray. Let it sit for a few minutes and rub it. You will see it disappear. Then throw it in the wash. It’s magic.

3 – How to get rid of blood – Pour peroxide on the stain and then add cold water. You will see it get lighter. Throw it in the washer immediately. The stain will be gone!

4 – How to fix putting too much salt in a sauce or soup you are cooking – Add a peeled raw potato into the dish and let it cook in the dish until it’s done. Take the potato out. The potato soaks up the salt. Your dish is saved!

5 – How to avoid onion tears – Keep your onions in the fridge. You will be surprised. You won’t need to wear goggles while cutting them up anymore 🙂 Also, if you want to add raw onion to your salad, but want to remove the harsh flavor, cut them up and soak them in ice cold water for 30 minutes. Then drain and add to your dish.

6 – How to revive limp celery – Cut the bottom end of the celery and put it in a glass with an inch of water. Put it in the fridge. Your celery will come back alive and crisp the following morning.

7 – How to revive hard brown sugar – Don’t throw it away! Put the sugar in a microwave safe bowl, put a wet paper towel over the sugar, and put it in the microwave for 1 minute. Then get out the rest of your cookie ingredients and make those chocolate chip cookies you are craving.

8 – How to bring back a stale loaf of bread – Run it under water extremely quick and then put it in the oven at 375 degrees for 5 to 10 minutes. Voila…fresh baguette!

9 – Prepping for a dinner party – Always set the table a day or two in advance. It’s so easy to have that done ahead of time even if you are running behind on other things. Also, try to make your dessert the night before. It really cuts down on prepping the day of the party. Stay tuned for some awesome dinner party recipes from Chef Anna (my mother) this month!

10 – Easy, delicious salad dressing – This dressing is one of my favorites that my mother makes. I keep it on hand in a mason jar in my fridge. Put the following ingredients into a Vitamix or a blender: 2 tablespoons of high quality mustard (dijon is our favorite), 1 teaspoon of minced garlic, 1 tablespoon of minced shallots, 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, 1/2 a lemon juiced, 2 tablespoons of honey, salt, pepper, drizzle a 1/4 cup of olive oil while the blender is running, and then while blender is still running thin it with a bit of water. Watch the mixture and use your judgement on how much water to use. Pour into a mason jar and use all the time! Enjoy!

11 – What should you always have in your kitchen – Wine!!!
