We all know the best way to avoid a hangover is to not drink at all or drink in moderation. Unfortunately, not drinking is usually not a realistic goal for most of us. We try to follow the rules, but there are nights when we don’t drink enough water throughout the day, we don’t eat dinner to hit happy hour early, or we just end up ordering that last drink we knew we didn’t need. We do the best we can. Good news….our bodies are resilient.
However, that statement doesn’t help us too much the next day when we are leaning over the toilet trying not to throw up breakfast with the worst headache known to man and all you want to do is hide in your bed until tomorrow comes. We have all been there. Even with these awful ramifications, we tend to repeat the same behavior yet again.
Here are a few natural hangover cures that we found through Mind Body Green that can help you in your time of need.
1. Coffee:
Coffee or not to coffee when hungover? Most of us question this and so does the health world. The last thing you need when you are hungover is something that will dehydrate your body even more like coffee. However, coffee naturally reduces headaches because it reduces swelling in your blood vessels. Our advice…if you drink coffee every morning, drink it. If you don’t, you can get a caffeine withdrawal headache causing you more pain. If you don’t drink coffee in your daily routine, don’t start now.
2. Ginger Tea:
Our friend and Kali Girl, Alicia, swears on ginger tea to cure a lot of aliments. It sounds crazy, but it actually works. Brew a fresh pot of tea and grate some fresh ginger into the tea for some anti-nausea pure plant medicine. It literally works wonders.
3. Hot-to-Cold Showering:
Have you ever been really hungover and jumped into a hot shower and then somehow feel a bit better? Well, next time take it to the next level and try this hot-to-cold showering method. Hot-to-cold showering helps detox toxins from your body while decreasing inflammation and stimulating circulation. It’s also know as hydrotherapy. It is one of the most underrated therapies out there. It has been used to treat a wide variety of issues such as reducing pain, reducing fatigue, and to stimulate the immune system.
4. Dry Brushing:
Help your body detox asap when you are hungover. We know you don’t want to, but we promise it will help. Before your hot-to-cold showering, try dry brushing your skin. This will increase circulation and stimulate your skin to start the detoxing process. What is dry brushing? Check it out here.
5. Eggs:
Feeling sick? Order some scrambled eggs asap. Why? After a night of boozing, your liver naturally breaks down the alcohol. The alcohol, also known as ethanol, is processed into acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde is a carcinogen and when your body has too much of it, you have the classic deadly hangover symptoms. How do you counteract this carcinogen? Lean to cysteine. It’s in eggs 🙂
6. Magnesium:
We love magnesium! It helps with headaches and relaxation. Also, drinking alcohol can reduce the magnesium in your body. We love it in liquid form. This is one of our favorites.
7. Coconut Water:
If you had a night out on the town drinking the night away, you are most likely dehydrated. You are also in need to replenish the electrolytes that were lost the night before. Coconut water is coming to your rescue. It contains five of the seven major electrolytes found in the body.
8. Get Your Steam On:
If you can find the time, take yourself to a steam room. Sweating will help rid your body of toxins, help you relax, and release endorphins, which will all help you feel better.
