So we’re not gonna lie…sometimes winter gets us down. It gets dark at like noon, it’s freezing outside, and the sun barely shines. The combo of these 3 things can leave us, and our skin, feeling and looking a little blah. We have some tips to help you beat the winter doldrums and have you feeling your best.
#1 Take a vitamin D supplement.
Did you know over 1 billion people worldwide are deficient in Vitamin D? It’s true, and with very little sunshine during the winter months, it’s easy to fall short of our needs. Taking a Vitamin D supplement can mimic the body’s reaction to sun exposure. There’s a very good reason it’s been dubbed “the sunshine vitamin”. It also boosts the immune system, which can be a major bonus during cold and flu season. Another plus? It’s shown in clinical studies to improve your mood! Just what we need when the dark and dreary winter is getting us down. Our favorite is Hum Nutrition’s Here Comes The Sun. It is a high potency D3 supplement which Hum calls “your daily dose of sunshine”.
It is so crucial all year to exfoliate, but especially during the winter. We are out in super cold temperatures and then come inside to blasting heat. Boy does that give our skin a beating. That’s why it’s so important to remove dead skin cells by exfoliating regularly.
Our favorite facial scrub is by Acure. It removes dead skin cells and clarifies the pores. We recommend using it 3 times a week for a glowing complexion. If you want go the acid route for exfoliation, we are huge fans of Drunk Elephant’s Baby Facial. It has a whopping 25% AHA, which evens texture while removing dead skin. This stuff is strong so only use it once a week.
Don’t forget your body! Make sure to exfoliate daily. We are totally obsessed with the dry brush from Joanna Vargas. Not only does it exfoliate the skin, but it also detoxifies the body by increasing circulation. Dry brushing also stimulates the nervous system which will leave you feeling totally invigorated. Bonus: it will help diminish the appearance of cellulite!
Definitely switch to a heavier moisturizer this time of year. For the face, we love Drunk Elephant’s Lala Retro. It brightens and delivers a steady dose of hydration all day. Another great tip is to spray a hydrating facial mist on before moisturizing and throughout the day. We’re partial to our Kali Rose Mist ;). This helps to lock in that extra moisture we desperately need.
Make sure you are moisturizing your body as well. It’s best to do it right after exfoliating when skin is still wet (it locks in the hydration that way). We keep moisturizer on hand throughout the day and reapply often to keep dry skin at bay. One of our favorites is the Almond and Vanilla Body Butter by Primally Pure. So hydrating and smells like frosting!
Ok, so we know that it might seem more appealing to lay on the couch and binge watch the Real Housewives, but we doubt it will do anything to boost your mood in the long run. Exercising can make you feel happier by releasing endorphins. Endorphins are hormones secreted by the brain to help produce positive feelings. Exercising can also reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, getting the blood flowing can not only improve your overall health, but skin health as well. Remember, often times, the hardest part is just forcing yourself to exercise. Once you do, your glad you did.
