Your suitcase is halfway full, emails are already in “out of office” mode, and all you can think about are frozen mojitos & getting that golden tan…Ahhh…that magical vacation feeling. But, no matter how much we try to tell ourselves we are gonna relax and not stress about working out & eating clean, we can’t help it…and that little voice in the back of our head prevents us from fully enjoying ourselves!
Worry no more girl, I got you 🙂 Here are my 5 best tips to stay on track on your holiday!
#1 Keep Moving!
Whether you’re a beach lover, fan of the mountains, or a city gal, find some activities you will enjoy on your holiday. Swimming, hiking, sightseeing, bike riding….those are all great ways to get your workout in without having to go to the gym! Because let’s face it, who reeeally wants to go to the gym on their holiday? I know I don’t. (if you’re one of the people who do, by all means, go and hit the gym – you do you girl ;)) I will always trade it up for morning swims, kayaking, occasional badminton matches, and evening walks. Find something you enjoy doing, include your friends and family, and have a great time! That way, you’ll be feeling amazing even though you didn’t do your regular upper/lower body weekly split.
#2 Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
I cannot stress this enough. We all know how important water is, but during summer, our bodies need even more of it than we think! Hot weather causes us to sweat, and therefore, lose more water than we normally would. If plain Jane water is too boring and you can’t bring yourself to drink around 2 liters everyday, spice it up with some fruit & veggie slices (cucumber, mint, strawberries, lemon), homemade iced teas, and freshly squeezed lemonades. Another great tip is to eat plenty of foods which have a higher water content, such as cucumbers, watermelon, celery, tomatoes, and leafy greens. Staying hydrated will also curb your cravings and keep you feeling satiated for longer 🙂
#3 Get your vitamins and minerals!
Instead of worrying over pizza or ice cream, shift your focus on making sure you get plenty of vitamins & minerals throughout the day. Seasonal fresh fruit and veggies are not only refreshing in the summer heat, but they’re also packed with nutrients which will keep your gut healthy, skin glowy, and help your body maintain that optimal balance. Best options would be freshly squeezed & natural juices, smoothies or smoothie bowls, veggie stir-frys and frittatas, yogurt (dairy & non-dairy) & fruit combos, chia seed puddings (for those necessary Omegas!), and fresh salads (with a variety of veggies).
“Eat the rainbow” is suuuch a cliche, I know, but every color is a sign of a different prevailing vitamin or mineral! For example, red foods such as red bell peppers, tomatoes, strawberry, and watermelon are full of lycopene which fights free radicals & prevents cancer; green foods such as spinach, swiss chard, arugula, and zucchini are rich in Vitamin K and folate which detoxify the body, restore vitality and boost the immune system; while orange and yellow foods such as oranges, lemon, and carrots are full of Vitamin A & C, fight disease, improve eyesight & aid the digestive system.
#4 Beauty sleep is named that for a reason!
Summer nights are made for having fun with your friends and staying out late, but I’m here to tell you to also sleep in the next day! Don’t feel guilty about doing so, cause there’s nothing worse than catching up on missed sleep. You’re on your holiday, so there’s no need to cut off your dreamland with the annoying sound of your alarm and bring your cortisol levels through the roof. Having enough sleep will keep your body in balance, reduce your cravings, prevent skin breakouts, and maintain great energy levels throughout the whole day!
#5 Stress go away!
I know all articles on “Best tips” end this way, but there’s a great reason why – because it works! Remember – you are on your holiday! That’s the time to relax, unwind, recharge your batteries, spend time with family and friends, and have some fun. Stressing about staying on track of your fitness and food goals is the least important thing you should be doing. I’m not saying stuff your face with pizza and ice cream all day everyday, but just know that even if you were to do so – it’s not the end of the world!
You have the control to get right back on track whenever you want, literally whenever. Making yourself go crazy because you didn’t work out for 3 days in a row is going to cause you more harm than the actual ‘not working out’ part. Move as much as you want to (and enjoy), eat loads of nutritious foods, sleep your soul out, drink plenty of water, and breathe in all the joy and happiness holidays are made for 🙂
