I don’t know about you, but I love to read. Literally, to me, there is nothing better than a good summer read while lounging next to a body of water sipping on a glass of rosé. Reading is such a great way to relax and get lost in your imagination. As adults, we need to make sure we find ways to stimulate our creativity and imagination.
There are so many great books right now. We narrowed it down to six. It was challenging to pick just a few. Some of these have been included in the book club I started in December of 2016. Are you part of a book club? I highly recommend it. It’s a great way to connect with your friends over great food and wine while having something really interesting to talk about.
These six books are — perfect for your summer vacation, your rooftop, or even the train to work!
#1 Red Notice by Bill Browder
I don’t even know where to begin with Red Notice. It’s a must read. I read it in two days. The book walks through the true story of Browder’s business success in Russia that includes corruption and murder in Vladimir Putin’s Russia. Bill Browder tells his story of how be became an accidental activist. He exposes corruption in Russia and barely makes it out alive. He, then, walks you through the process of passing a bill in the USA – The Magnitsky Act – that punishes 60 Russians implicated in the death of his attorney. This book is about how one man was able to change the world with his determination and persistence. BUY HERE.
#2 The Female Persuasion by Meg Wolitzer
This book grabs you right from the start. The main character, Greer, is a shy freshman in college who is in head over heels in love with her boyfriend, Cory. Her life was all figured out until she meets Faith, an elegant sixty-three year old woman who has been a pillar of the women’s movement for decades. After hearing Faith speak, Greer finds an ambition she never knew she had before. Meg Wolitzer delivers a novel about influence, power, loyalty, and ego. This book is about the flame we all believe is flickering within each of us. It’s a story about the journey to finding that light. BUY HERE.
#3 Sociable by Rebecca Harrington
When Elinor moved to NYC with a journalism degree in her hand, she envisioned her life would be filled with chic dinners with her journalist boyfriend, parties with famous writers, and writing for a big newspaper. Instead, she finds herself as a nanny. When Elinor is offered a job at Journalism.ly, the digital media brainchild of a celebrity, she doesn’t think twice before accepting. At this position, she finds her true gift for creating sharable, viral content. However, her overnight success doesn’t come without a cost. She ends up single living in a fifth-floor walkup. She begins to wonder if this is the creative life she dreamed of. This novel is a hilarious story of a young woman looking for happiness. BUY HERE.
#4 The Favorite Sister by Jessica Knoll
This is one of my favorite books this year. It’s a book about two competitive sisters that are cast as costars in a reality show called Goal Diggers. The show focuses on the lives of a group of highly competitive women in NYC. It’s a novel filled with manipulation, murder, and drama to say the least. You have a group of friends that turn into frenemies and then into suspects. It will keep your guessing all the until the last page. BUY HERE.
#5 The Glitch by Elisabeth Cohen
Glitch is a hilarious novel about a high-profile, powerful CEO and mother of two who initially seems like she has everything together until a younger version of herself appears. Shelley is committed to living her most efficient life – taking power naps while standing in line, scheduling sex with her husband while they are changing, and her personal time is at 3:30 am on the treadmill. When she meets a young women who is also named Shelley with the same scar on her shoulder, she begins to question everything. This book will have you laughing out loud while looking at work, marriage, and motherhood. BUY HERE.
#6 When Katie Met Cassidy by Camille Perri
This novel is a romantic comedy about sexuality and gender. It reminds us that the first step to going after what we truly want is to figure who we truly are. When Katie, a mid-twenties Kentucky transplant, gets dumped by her fiancé she finds herself completely lost. She, then, meets Cassidy, a sexy, strong, native New Yorker wearing a man’s suit. They have an undeniable connection that has them both question everything they thought about sex and love. Katie’s experience begins to alter how she sees the larger world and where she fits in.
