I don’t recommend you totally throw your wellness rituals out the window while traveling even though it’s all about switching up your routine. It’s a delicate balance to enjoy yourself on your vacay while also not going crazy. Moderation is key and to not drive yourself insane in the process of adding wellness to your trip. Your sanity (and travel buddies) will thank you. These are the key rules of wellness I stick to while I’m traveling:
Pack a Versatile Wardrobe.
There’s nothing more annoying than having to pack a whole second set of clothes just so you can maybe work out if you get a chance. For this reason alone, I try to pack workout clothes that I will also wear out-and-about. For example, today’s cute outfit with yoga pants gets recycled as tomorrow’s yoga pants for… well yoga. Luckily, athleisure is also all the rage and it’s not too hard to find cute sneakers that can work double duty at the gym.
BYOS: Bring Your Own Snacks.
Okay, maybe it’s just me, but I need to eat every 3-hours or I become a hangry human. Depending on where I’m traveling, the snack options can be more indulgent than nutritious. I’m looking at you, Disneyland churro. I always keep a stash of single-serve packets of almonds or cashews handy and Larabars ready for when hunger starts to strike. And then I get the churro for dessert instead.
I’m talking about water, of course. Whether you’re hopping on a plane or going the distance in a car, hydration is ALWAYS a good choice. According to The Daily Meal, drinking water before traveling has a lot of added benefits, such as hydrating your skin, oxygenating your muscles, and reduces swelling. I find that drinking enough water is the best way for me to feel my best. I have more energy and less headaches when I’m hydrated.
Explore by Foot.
Walking has always been my favorite way to both explore a new city and get some movement in. I feel like it kills two birds with one stone and walking is good for you. Exploring a new city by foot is far more enjoyable than running on a treadmill staring at a wall.
