Ah…the dreaded PMS….cravings hit us hard, we’re moody, too emotional, & the worst of all – in pain. Did you know that around 80% women experience period pain and cramps every month? 80%! Isn’t that an insane number?

My periods used to be pretty bad; crunching on the floor-high fever-and-nausea bad. Pain killers were the only thing that helped, but only the hardcore ibuprofen, and it was causing my stomach lots of discomfort. After a while, I developed a bit of a resistance towards the painkillers, and literally nothing was working for me. I thought I was going to go insane!

Last year, I got introduced to essential oils, and I fell in love with everything they were doing for me – helping me sleep, digest food, dropping them in my face cream (frankincense is king!), and relieving my menstrual pains! I couldn’t believe it! After years and years of building my pain tolerance (my gynecologist actually told me I was having real labour contractions), I was finally feeling some relief!  I wanted to use this post to share with you the ones I found work for me, and after speaking to multiple women, for them too 🙂

5 Essentials Oils for Your Period:

#1 Clary Sage

Clary Sage is THE BEST essential oil a woman can ever use. It’s like my little guardian angel for that time of the month, as well as my beauty sleep hack! Its use dates back to the Middle Ages (I mean, what??), and it’s one of the most relaxing, soothing, and balancing essential oils in the world.

How I use it:

  • During my cycle & throughout PMS, I rub 3-5 drops on my abdomen and massage it in to combat those cramps!
  • Combine it with Bergamot & Roman Chamomile and add to bath salts for the best stress-relieving & soothing bath.
  • Diffuse it during the night and turn myself into a sleeping beauty 🙂

#2 Ylang Ylang

If you’ve ever wondered what is that exquisite, floral, but not too sweet smell in most perfumes – it is Ylang Ylang. One of my favorite scents in the world (next to Jasmine and Rose). It comes from this yellow star-shaped flower and is used to reduce stress & overall tension, while promoting feelings of peace and joy.

How I use it:

  • Diffuse it all over the house, especially during PMS, so I don’t get too cranky and moody (my husband definitely appreciates that!).
  • Add it to my face cream for a homemade, aromatherapy facial.
  • Add a drop to my water to promote antioxidant support & help with cramps!
  • I use it as perfume and dab it onto my wrists.

#3 Bergamot

Italians and Greeks know the secret to life, from their olive oil & cheese to wine & bergamot essential oil. They’ve been using it for centuries to reduce stress and uplift the mood. I’ve recently managed to buy the fruit too, but wasn’t really into eating it (too sour), so I used the zest in my raw cakes & added it to my homemade body scrub.

How I use it:

  • Add it to my herbal tea before bedtime to promote restful sleep.
  • Mix it into my raw cake batter and create stress-reducing brownies (I’m gonna need to patent that!).
  • Combine with Clary Sage and add to baths or apply a few drops before a foot massage (ladies, let your man help you out *wink* *wink*).

#4 Lavender

Ok gals, lavender is so versatile, you just need to get it anyways! It’s absolutely amazing for the skin, clearing up imperfections and those hormonal acne, perfect for getting yourself into sleepy mode, reduces inflammation and irritation, repels bugs & mosquitos, and it’s awesome for baking or adding to your herbal teas.

How I use it:

  • Add it to my face cream, especially during PMS when that stupid pimple shows up.
  • Add a drop into my herbal tea to reduce anxious feelings.
  • I make these bomb almond, macadamia & lavender cookies (and I’m not even bragging!).

The majority of people massage a few drops into the bottom of their feet, add it to evening baths, or diffuse it throughout the night to improve their sleep, but here’s an interesting fact about me – I get nightmares when I do so, soooo I don’t use it in that way (which doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try for yourself).

#5 Roman Chamomile

Did you know that ancient Romans used roman chamomile oil for courage during war? Well, if it was good for them…it must be good for our monthly battles! It soothes the skin & calms down the nervous system, making it a perfect little sidekick when you need a breather.

How I use it:

  • Add it to my herbal tea (you see a pattern here, right? Well, one drop of an essential oil equals to 5000 bags of herbal teas- just sayin’).
  • Diffuse it throughout the day if I’m working from home to help me clear my mind.
  • Add it to my body butter to soothe my skin during PMS & my cycle as it tends to get very sensitive

Well now you know it! The secret to a calmer, happier, and less stressed YOU is out! I swear by these oils so much, I created a special custom kit on my website for all of you strong & amazing Kali women, so you can simply click HERE & get 25% off the retail price 🙂 It has everything you need to help you use those days in the month to be your best self; and when combined with Kali’s amazing organic products, nothing can stop you, and the future is indeed; female!
